VIII International Festival
Music of the Greater Hermitage

Artistic Director - Composer Sergei Yevtushenko

Finding its feet, the musical festivals of the State Hermitage Museum are constantly broadening the genres and styles of its activities. Following the Musical Hermitage Winter Festival, which has taken up the entire palette of musical genres from the baroque to the latest waves in jazz and ethno-fusion, the summer festival, Music of the Greater Hermitage will this time present legendary musicians from world music, jazz and art rock.

7 July at 8 pm at one of the best concert halls in St. Petersburg, the Saint Petersburg Academic Glinka Capella, whose architecture fits so perfectly into the astonishing austerity and beauty of the architectural ensemble of Palace Square, the VIII International Festival Music of the Greater Hermitage will present the legendary group Huun-Huur-Tu, which means 'sunny propeller' (which is the name given to dispersed light breaking through clouds). The performance by this world famous musical group promises to be a real sensation.

Huun-Huur-Tu's music is unique and magical, absorbing the full legacy of Tuvan folklore and the tradition of overtone singing and developing this heritage. Group members demonstrate their unique gift - overtone singing is when a vocalist is capable of singing two or even three distinguished in pitch by up to four octaves. For accompaniment the musicians use traditional Tuvan instruments - doshpuluur, igil, khomus, various percussion instruments and a traditional guitar. The most interesting feature of Huun-Huur-Tu's music is the skillful combination of ancient culture with passages from contemporary music.

Since the group's creation the band has performed at practically all of the largest festivals for world music, jazz and even rock music, they have given approximately a thousand concerts, have recorded and performed with leading musicians from a wide range of musical genres, such as Stevie Wonder, Frank Zappa, Ry Cooder, Kronos Quartet, Mickey Heart (Greatful Dead), Shankar, Trilok Gurtu, Fun-Da-Mental, Bulgarian Voices Angelite, Moscow Art Trio and others. Along with the group Sainkho Namtchylak will perform - a singer no less astonishing, a woman with an exotic name and an enigmatic shaman-like voice. A Tuvan singer, she has exchanged Siberia for Moscow, and then, according to the will of fate became a citizen of the world. Her festival and artistic life today takes place in the four corners of the world. Initially Sainkho became famous as a Soviet performer of Tuvan folklore. But even at the start of her career she was considered to be a daring experimenter and synthesizer of musical ideas based on folklore. In 1991 the creative quest had taken her to jazz musicians and she added free jazz to her repertoire of a talented performer of world music.

8 July according to the tradition which has already been established - the Grand Courtyard of the Winter Palace is to be filled with the sounds of contemporary jazz, performed by legendary musicians.

Bill Bruford has for more than thirty years been considered as one of the best drummers in the world. His unique percussions and astonishing manner for playing them has gained him the reputation of an original and unforgettable musician. It is likely that he is the only drummer in recent musical history who has acquired equal fame for both rock and jazz.

Bill Bruford is one of the forefathers of art and progressive rock, since he is the drummer for two of the main groups: Yes and King Crimson. It was specifically with Bruford that these groups recorded their best albums, which became rock classics, and it was with him that they did their world tours.

In the mid 1990s Bruford's interests became more focused on jazz. He started his own project Earthworks, which soon became one of the best and most novel projects in the world for jazz and jazz-rock. Today's Earthworks quartet consists of the best, young, British, jazz musicians including, apart from Bruford, another star of worldwide proportions, the instrumentalist Tim Garland. In just two years of work with the famous jazz pianist Chick Corea Tim Garland has become not only a famous saxophonist and clarinetist but also a prolific composer.

This year Bill Bruford and Tim Garland will play together with the famous jazz pianist and composer from St. Petersburg, Andrei Kondakov, bass player for the Russian group Akvarium, Andrei Svetlov, and also a leading guitarist, professor at the Berkeley College of Music, David Fiuczynski - leader for the group Screaming Headless Torsos, and member of the Hasidic New Wave and Jazz Punk projects, whose energetic style while playing goes beyond the limits of what is acceptable - roaring out rock keys with such ease that they transcend into funk or eastern arabesque.
