This imposing hall of the Winter Palace was one of the five halls constituting the gallery of battle painting designed by the architect Alexander Briullov after the fire of 1837. The gallery was used to represent canvases devoted to Russian victories before the War of 1812. The solemn décor of the hall is created by a combination of the lavishly adorned ceiling with its gilt and painted decoration imitating stuccowork, the architectural décor around the doors and the beautiful inlaid parquet floors. Today the hall displays the exhibition "French Art and Sculpture of the 1830s to 1860s". Creative activities of the most brilliant Rococo artist Francois Boucher is represented by such impressive paintings as: The Rest on the Flight to Egypt (1757), Pygmalion and Galatea, Pastoral Scene (early 1740s), Landscape in the Neighbourhood of Beauvais (early 1740s). The hall also features works by the eminent sculptor Etienne Maurice Falconet with the impressive Cupid (1757) among them.
