Animal and Man. Ancient Art of Eurasia

On 16 April, 2002, an exhibition of ancient Eurasian art was opened in rooms 28-32 of the Winter Palace. It shows about 370 exhibits from the State Hermitage Museum, Institute of Material Culture History of the Russian Academy of Sciences and other collections. They were found in Eastern Europe, Ural, Transuralian lands and Siberia and span the period from upper paleolithic to early middle ages. Most of the exhibits are showed for the first time (Sapogovsky hoard), some of them have not even been published.
The exhibition objective is to show the complicated development of the ancient man's idea of the world and his place in it. The most recurrent images in ancient peoples' art from the paleolithic time were animal and man. Each epoch had its own artistic language. The exhibition shows the development of the images of animal and man in household and cult objects (weapons, figurine-surmounted warders, etc.) over almost 30 thousand years.
The exhibition is organized by the Hermitage with the participation of the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Kunstkammer), Institute of Material Culture History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, State History Museum and Archeology Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow), D.G. Burylin State Museum of Local History and State University (Ivanovo), Sverdlovsk Region Museum of Local History, Ural State University and Institute of History and Archeology (Yekaterinburg), Municipal Museum of Mining in the Middle Ural and State Pedagogical Institute (Nizhny Tagil), Karelian State Museum of Local History and Institute of Language, Literature and History of the Karelian Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Petrozavodsk), Vologda State Museum of History and Arts, Vladimir and Suzdal Museum of History and Arts (Vladimir), Sergiyev Posad State Museum of History and Arts, Tver State Museum, Pskov State Museum of History and Arts and Estonian Society of Primitive Art Research (Tartu).
