This is a copy of the statuette of a Running Elephant by Antoine-Louis Barye, a leading French sculptor of animals who was active in the 19th century. In the 1830s he produced several compositions showing elephants which immediately caught the Paris public fancy. Many copies of his small figurine of the Running Elephant (also known as Senegal Elephant) marked by a noble manner of execution and dynamism were cast by the remarkable craftsman Ferdinand Barbedienne to be readily bought by collectors.
