Fedoskino Box with the Cathedral of St Isaac of Dalmatia
Zoom

Fedoskino, a village near Moscow, has been well known since the 18th century as a place where refined lacquered miniatures were produced. Using old techniques and materials (oil, mother-of-pearl and gold leaf) contemporary Fedoskino artists represent both traditional and new subjects. The Cathedral of St Isaac in St Petersburg was created by Auguste de Montferrand in 1818-58. This box shows a view towards the cathedral from the Neva River.

Lacquered papier-mache.
