Medallion-maker Fedor Tolstoy captured the legendary bravery of Russian heroes in this commemorative medallion depicting General Vasilchikov as a Roman warrior casting down at the legs of a horse the collective image of the overpowered enemy. On 7 (19) February 1814, advance Russian units under the command of I.V. Vasilchikov took the small French town of Fere-Champenoise. Russian hussars fought the remnants of Napoleon's troops in order to overthrow what was left of his influence on European politics.
