A poster of Cottages by Vincent Van Gogh. The original (1890, France; oil on canvas, 23 1/4 x 28 1/4 in.) came to the Hermitage in 1948 from the State Museum of New Western Art in Moscow. This was one of the last works created by Van Gogh. To him, the thatched roofs of the peasants cabins were an essential part of nature like sky, fields, and hills. Van Gogh's dramatic tension is felt in the vividness of the colors, the restless rhythm of the thick, energetic brushstrokes, and the expressiveness of line. 24 x 16 1/2 in. (60 x 42 cm). |
