A poster of Madonna and Child (The Madonna Conestabile) by Raphael. The original (1504, Italy; tempera on canvas, 6 7/8 x 7 1/8 in.) came to the Hermitage in 1871 from the collection of Count Conestabile of Perugia. This early work by Rafael features superb composition, beautiful linear rhythm, and a noble color scheme. The picture was purchased by Alexander II, who presented it to his wife, Empress Maria Alexandrovna.
