Coat-of-arms with a double-headed eagle, symbolizing a supreme power and independence, appeared in Russia in the end of the 15th century. From the middle of the 16th century a horseman (one of the oldest symbols of a prince's power) began to be depicted in the center of the double-headed eagle. After the revolution of 1917 the state coat-of-arms was replaced but in 1993 it was again made the double-headed eagle with a silver horseman on its bosom. Bronze, painting. 3 3/8 x 2 3/4 in.
