A silver replica of a ring decorated with the Shou character, which represents longevity. The original, from the Late Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) or early Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), belonged to Empress Catherine the Great and was displayed at the Hermitage in 1789. The ring is decorated with a stylized Shou character. The Chinese believed that the amulet would bring them a long and healthy life. Traditionally, such rings were worn in matching pairs on the fingers of both hands. Silver gilt. |
