In the late 19th century after successful performances ballerinas of the Mariinsky Theater would receive royal gifts, such as necklaces or bracelets designed by Carl Faberge and Christian Bolin. The Hermitage collection boasts quite a number of these ornaments. Fantasies of modern jewelers on their motifs would have been approved by Mathilde Kshesinskaya herself who got many presents of the kind from Nicholas Romanov.
