Such a purely foliate motif, without any stylization or decoration, is a traditional element of the Art Nouveau style. Legend holds that Adel Bloch-Bauer, a favorite model and lover of Gustav Klimt, a famous Art Nouveau painter, was fond of wearing a silver ornament in the form of a chestnut leaf. The legend has inspired this fantasy of a jeweler embodied in the brooch and pendant.
