Delaroche, Hippolyte (Paul). 1797-1856

Resting on the Bank of the Tiber

France, Between 1834 and 1843

This painting is associated with the Gospels subject of the Holy Family's Rest on the Flight into Egypt. The strict pyramidal composition imparts balance and firmness to the figures - the features typical of both neoclassic and academic art. In the left-hand part of the composition the artist included a realistically painted view of Rome with Castel Sant'Angelo. In the Hermitage painting Delaroche's treatment of small joys of family life is devoid of the sentimental sweetness typical of many Salon paintings on similar themes. The work reveals the best facets of the artist's talent.
