On October 27, 2016 the International Hermitage Friends’ Club opened its twentieth season. The first event of this special season featured the introduction of the State Hermitage Museum Department of Numismatics.
The meeting, entitled ‘Under the protection of the goddess Juno Moneta’ (Moneta is a Roman epithet of Juno), opened in the Concert hall of the Winter Palace with the word of welcome by Svetlana Adaxina, Deputy Director of the State Hermitage Museum.
Dr. Vitaliy Kalinin, Head of the Numismatic Department of the State Hermitage Museum, introduced to the Friends his department, its long history and its newly-opened permanent exhibitions dedicated to the history of money in the world culture and the Russian art of medal-making. The introduction was followed by a short video about the halls, the exhibits, and the department staff preparing for the opening of new permanent displays.
Following the video, Mikhail Veryovkin, specialist of the Laboratory of Scientific Conservation of Precious Metals, made a brief presentation on a new restoration project: ‘Restoration of a Wax Portrait of Grigoriy Potyomkin from the Collection of the Department of Numismatics’. Hermitage Friends were invited to participate in financing the restoration of this wonderful portrait, which after its restoration will undoubtedly add to the grandeur of the new permanent displays of the Numismatic Department.
After the presentation, Friends were invited into the galleries of the Numismatic Department where they were offered a unique opportunity to see the new exhibitions and to ask their questions to the curators, who introduced their collections to the guests.
We encourage everyone who is not yet a member of the Hermitage Friends' Club to do so by joining before the event, which will provide your participation in all the exclusive events for the members of the Hermitage Friends' Club only.
