Avenue in a Park

France, circa 1715

One of the six drawings by Antoine Watteau in the Hermitage - in addition to a good selection of his small, intimate paintings - this landscape composition was created whilst the artist was staying with the collector and patron, Pierre Crozat. Watteau showed an avenue of trees leading to a small pavilion on the Crozat estate at Montmorency. Executed in a soft, sketchy style, the sheet creates the impression of a direct sketch from nature. The drawing was engraved by François Boucher for the anthology of engravings Figures de différent caractères, published in 1726-28 by Jean de Jullienne.
