Allegorical Female Figure with a Spear and a Cornucopia

Russia, mid-18th century

The painting depicts an allegorical female figure sitting on a cloud and holding a spear and a horn of plenty. The monochrome grisaille technique produces the illusion of a three-dimensional moulded relief. The figure and its surrounding in the form of a frame with rocailles and garlands imitate white stuccowork, while the background of the panel is made to look like veined red marble. The creation of an impression of volume is furthered by the shadows emphasizing the depth of the space and “advancing” the frame and the central figure into the foreground.
